Sometimes it is worth it!

Becca skates in the morning before school. That means that if we are where we should be, we are out the door by 7am to be to the rink and get her dressed and warmed up for her 7:30 lesson. We are not where we should be very often.

This morning we were running late, barely made it to the rink by 7:30. Got to the rink- no skates!! David brought her home from the rink last night while I had my board meeting and took her skates with her. Quick call to David and the skates are on their way. David was only about 10 minutes away, so he was there pretty quick. Oh no- Becca wore her footies home last night and left them in her room. Only had one extra, so she skated with one footie and one bare foot. I told Coach Amy that we were a disaster. She disagreed in that polite way that people have, mostly to make me feel better!

I guess the crazy morning worked out for Becca. Started by warming up her sit spin. Then they did sit, change, back sit. It was beautiful! Let's try flying camel. FLYING CAMEL??? Okay. She did it- not well, but it was a flying camel spin. Practiced that a few more times. Next move on to the axel. She had landed a cheated one on Tuesday, but the axel is one of those things that one day you do it, and you might not see another one for 6 months. I was a hopeful mom, but realistic. Right now the axel is the holy grail of Becca's skating group- they are all busting their behinds to get there. It is almost monumental- like the axel transforms you into a 'real' skater. My baby is a real skater. She landed 2 more good ones today. She was given the green light to practice them outside of lessons. A couple more flying camels, and then they started working on her Double Salchow. Yeah, that needs a little work. :) But she is on her way. She was so proud of herself, and Coach Amy bought her a cookie at the snack bar. 2 axels and a cookie for breakfast? That is a pretty good day!

Stand Up.. Be Proud.. Shout Your Name.. Out Loud..

We Are The WOLVERINES!!!

I thought I had a better handle on what to expect at Becca's cheer competition today. I have had a lot of experience with Becca competiting at skating, but I was really unprepared for how over stimulating the cheerleaders, yelling fans, and loud music could be. I left totally exhausted, and all I had done was sit on a high school bleacher for 4 hours!
Becca's team was called 'mini'. They don't compete at that level, it is strictly exhibition. The girls did great and seemed to have a wonderful time!
I feel like their program was a pretty good mix of cute and attitude. The squad is girls from Kindergarten to 4th grade. When she cheers for football games only the girls that are Kindergarten to 2nd grade cheer, the 3rd and 4th graders have their own football team. They were combined for competition purposes, and we were still the smallest mini squad by a long shot! They did great!
The Wolverines also had a squad that competed at the 5th & 6th grade level and the 7th & 8th grade level. Both of those teams took first place in their divisions, so it was a pretty good day for the Wolverines.

Mostly I am just glad that this is the end of cheer! Becca really likes it, so we may do it again next year, but for now it is over!!! The play is over, and all that is left is skating. I feel like I have gained tons of free time!! :)

James and the Giant Peach

I went to my first middle school play tonight. It really was better than I had expected it to be. It was dark- really dark, and the kids talked faster than I thought was possible. Overall, they got the story across really well and they seemed to be having a good time.

Tomorrow is a big day- a football game, 2 birthday parties, and the encore performance of James. I am going to need my rest tonight for sure!!

04 November 2010

same stuff different day!

Okay, so it is only the 4th and I have already missed a day. Whoops! What this is teaching me is that there really isn't anything all that interesting that goes on in my life! :)

I think we had the last cheerleading practice of the season tonight. There is a game on Saturday and the competition on Sunday. If the team wins Saturday, then the final game is the November 11th.

The final rehearsal of James and the Giant Peach was this afternoon. There are shows tomorrow night and Saturday, and then middle school returns to normal!

Tomorrow morning is Dads and doughnuts at Becca's school. It is beyond unreasonable how early you have to be to these things. I went to Moms and muffins 10 minutes early last year, and the entire cafeteria was full and they were frantically trying to find over flow space. I guess I am glad that we have a school with a lot of parent support. I am the Friday Folder mom for Becca's class, so I will head to school right before they start.

It is amazing how I feel like I am constantly running and yet there is nothing going on.......

I read this on the internet earlier today. The sacrifices that these women made are so inspiring to me! They were strong, they were brave, and they were willing to stand up for what they believed in. I am so thankful that they paved the way for my voice to be heard today.

This is the story ……
of our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago.

By Lu Kembel, Tucson League of Women Voters

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

Women picketing for the right to voteThe women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

Women marching for the right to voteAnd by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of ‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh MY memory. Some women won’t vote this year because – Why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining?

Mrs Pauline Adams in the prison garb she wore while serving a 60 day sentence.

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s new movie ‘Iron Jawed Angels.’ It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

Miss Edith Ainge, of Jamestown, New York

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

(Conferring over ratification [of the 9th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution] at [National Woman's Party] headquarters, Jackson Place [Washington, D.C.]. L-R Mrs. Lawrence Lewis, Mrs. Abby Scott Baker, Anita Pollitzer, Alice Paul, Florence Boeckel, Mabel Vernon (standing, right))

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was–with herself. ‘One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,’ she said. ‘What would those women think of the way I use, or don’t use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.’ The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her ‘all over again.’

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco/Bingo night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: ‘Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.’

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party – remember to vote.

NaBloPoMo

It's national blog posting month! I am going to try to post every day for the next 30 days and see if I can bring this blog back from the dead!!

Things have been hectic here. Becca decided to try cheerleading, and she really likes it. She is about done for the season, I think she will be finished this weekend. She is really cute doing it! That is her friend Meadow in the picture. She is in kindergarten this year, so it seems that Becca is still a bit on the small side!! There are 9 girls on her cheer squad, and they seem to have a good time together.

Cameron is doing the middle school play this weekend. The production is James and the Giant Peach, one of his favorite books from when he was younger. He wanted to be on the stage crew, but the director has a rule that even if you want to be on the crew you still have to try out. He has a small extra part as a townsperson as well as his crew duties. I think he is really enjoying being a part of the play. You don't get a lot of information out of him at this point.

The pumpkin bread is almost done and I need to head to bed for the night. More later. :)

Happy Birthday to this guy!

Happy Birthday Cameron! This is the oldest picture that I have of you on my computer- you are so old that you were born when I was still using *film* LOL! I can not believe how fast the time has gone and that now you are 12 years old. I hope that this is your best year yet!!!

I had to throw in this picture of Becca because I miss the bows!! Notice my children coordinate, but do not completely match. I can't believe I used to have the time to mess with stuff like that! Now they are lucky if they get out the door with all of their clothes on.

I freakin hate this time of year!

I really like fall- for the most part. However, we have a terrible problem with spiders outside (and inside) our house this time of year. They tend to return to the same places each year. Always one right by the slider door on the deck, one on the side of the house by the deck, and this year there are 2 in the landscaping in front of the house. One of the spiders in the landscaping is a wolf spider, albeit a small one. I can't wait until we get a good freeze and get rid of these things!

Still the mom of 2

Last night was Cameron's first night of private swimming lessons. When I first told him that he was taking swimming lessons he flat refused to go. Once we got him there he seemed to be doing fine, but the longer we waited on the deck of the pool the more scared he got. He started to cry and say that he didn't want to drown. There are 2 pools where he is taking the lessons, one of them is a shallow pool that is warmer for people that have arthritis and then they have the larger swimming pool. The instructor decided that they would start in the shallow pool. Cameron was doing pretty well with what she asked him to do, and he had a pretty successful lesson. At the end of the lesson she asked him if he wanted to try the big pool, and he said no.

I think that she is going to teach him how to swim in the shallow pool since he is small enough to be able to learn there, and offer the big pool every lesson. Once he is comfortable with swimming they will move him to the big pool. I really like the instructor, and I think that she is very well equipped to deal with his fear. All in all, it was a pretty big success in my eyes. Cameron even asked if we could join the community center so that he could practice his swimming. I'm really proud of him.

The wild things Becca says

I was taking Becca to school yesterday after skating and she asked me if Cameron was already at school. I told her no, that Cameron was just getting on the bus, and he would probably be at school in the next 10 minutes or so, right about the time we were getting there. She replied- he might be there already mom. That bus goes damn fast!

I guess it is time for her parents to reflect on the language they use around children. Whoops!

17 September 2008

New Skates- again.

We are buying more new skates for Becca this week. Luckily I scored a pair that are consignment so they are half the price of new. We now seem to be buying skates about once every 6 months- not a pace that I would like to keep up! Poor thing, her toes were totally cramped up in the end of her old skates. We tried the consignment skates tonight and her scratch spin was much better. Of course her toes weren't folded under........

I'm springing swimming lessons on Cameron Thursday night. That should be fun! He is doing private lessons for the next 4 weeks and we will go from there. Once I am done with him I think it will be Becca's turn. It would be fabulous if they could both swim before we go to Disney in December. I might be getting a bit ahead of myself there though.

Becca is in the Literacy group in her reading challenge. They divided up the challenge kids into 2 groups, ones that still need to work on advanced sight words and the ones that are already reading. Becca is in the already reading group. There are 3 in the group, and none from her class. I think she will have a good time though.

Not much else going on here. I am shadowing my cousin at her job again tomorrow. Craft night is tomorrow as well. All in all, a pretty easy week!

13 September 2008

Congratulations Becca...

Becca brought home a note in her backpack Friday letting us know that she had been accepted in the reading challenge at school. I am a proud mama for sure! The goals for this reading challenge are to read at an instructional level, chart comprehension, and expand the number of sight words she can recognize. They will meet 2 times a week from Sept 15th until the end of October.

Yay Becca!

12 September 2008

A big weekend & I'm done with Disney!

We have quite a weekend coming up! Becca has Power and Edges tonight and Skate-A-Thon, then tomorrow morning she has a cheer clinc. She is participating in a cheer clinc with the high school and then next Friday they get to cheer at halftime during the football game. I think she will have a good time. Cameron will be spending the weekend with his nose in a book- he has a book project due on the 23rd and he isn't even half through his book yet. He is reading A Wrinkle in Time. David read it when he was about Cameron's age, but I have never read it.

Our Disney accomdations are finally finished! We had some flight changes that made it necesscary for me to make changes and add a night. The first night we are staying at the Coronado Springs and then switching to the Animal Kingdom Lodge for the rest of our trip. It is very exciting to finally have those decisions made. We also have our tickets to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and Cirque du Soliel purchased, and reservations for our Sunrise Safari. All of our dinner reservations are made and confirmed, and yet it seems like I still have so much left to do. At least I have gotten this far! I keep reminding myself that at this point last year we hadn't even decided to go and everything was fine. Of course, then I remind myself that none of us had been there before and we didn't have any idea what to expect. Ah my internal conflicts.

The bus will be here soon and then I am on the run! Have great weekend!

10 September 2008

Back in the groove

Ah- the school year schedule is underway! We only have to add dance class next week and then we are set. I think we are adding swimming lessons for Cameron in the next couple of weeks, but then that is really it.

We have had some exciting things going on around here. Monday they tested Becca for the reading challenge at school. I haven't heard if she got in or not, but it's hard for me to imagine that she didn't. Cameron was one of only 2 kids that got an A on his Social Studies test, and synchro started up again. Becca started her new class- Bronze Freestyle- and loved it! I looked out on the ice and she was landing toe loops left and right. They looked really good, even her coach was surprised. she must have landed 20 of them!

It looks like we will be going on an all girls trip to Arkansas for the Ozark Invitational skating competition. Aunt Stephanie and cousin Emma are going to join us. We are in progress with getting dresses made and I started stoning a cowboy hat this afternoon. All I have left to do is figure out how to build a fence for her to pull out on the ice and I am done.

I shadowed my cousin Carrie at her job on Tuesday. She works for the company that takes the newborn pictures in the hospital. It was really pretty fun and I think I might be interested in working for that company as well. We will have to see what comes of it.

Becca has a cheer clinic this weekend and next Friday night she will get to cheer at the high school football game during halftime. I am hoping that I can convince her that is enough cheering for the fall.

My allergies are horrible right now, but they were talking on the news this morning about how they are expecting an early freeze and colder weather. I was so excited to hear that!

ugh, I've got to get the backpacks together and get to bed. Becca has an early lesson tomorrow. I think skating is going to force me into being a morning person. blech!

02 September 2008

Did you know that life isn't fair?

Ugh- I am not a fan of 5th grade! Cameron forgot to bring home something from his science notebook for me to sign- the consequence of that action is he misses his entire recess tomorrow. I think it is a little harsh, but I don't get to make the rules. I am pretty sure at this point that it will be a good long time before he forgets to bring something home again. The downside for me at this point is now he is in a total rage about the situation and the fact that it isn't fair. I tried explaining to him that it was fair, he knew ahead of time that missing recess was the consequence of not having all his papers signed. He didn't have to like it, and he could think that the rule was wrong, but it absolutely was fair. That was not what he wanted to hear. He is currently locked in his room and is never going to school again. Honestly, this is the part that just wears me out. You can not reason with him, nothing is going to convince him that missing recess isn't the end of the world, and he is basically inconsolable- and he will be until he gets home from school tomorrow. Ack- it gives me a headache.

I also went and registered Becca for dance tonight. The line was pretty long, but she is in the class at least. I saw a couple of familiar faces- Valerie that recommended that Becca take classes there and Donna who was her teacher this summer. I am still not quite comfortable there yet. I am just so spoiled by knowing so many people at the rink and having been there so long that I practically could work there. It is a very nice place though.

I guess that we are off the cheerleading. Becca would love to do it, but I can't seem to get this one place to give me information and cheerleading at the place she did gymnastics just doesn't fit into her schedule. I think I will sign her up for a clinic hosted by the high school cheerleaders. Maybe I can convince her that is all there is!

I think David is home from band and I need to get the laundry started. I think I need to plan in a nap tomorrow!

29 August 2008

I went back to school!

Last night was back to school night- my first ever with 2 kids in school. That was a rush! Luckily I have the correct age spacing so I could make both teacher presentations. I went to Becca's classroom first. I was just dying to ask her about how much trouble Becca was getting in. Everyday she comes home with a story about how she got in trouble- not laying down during rest time, etc. Her teacher was totally surprised with that information. She told me that Becca had been a perfect angel since school started. It came as a bit of a relief to me, as I know that Becca can be prone to a bit of misbehavior, but not really a surprise. I had figured that if Becca had been in all the trouble she thought she was in I would have heard from the teacher by now. It was really neat to sit next to all the parents of the girls I have heard so much about the past 3 weeks and hear that they had heard about Becca too. I skipped the principal meeting and went to talk to Cameron's 4th grade teacher. It was great to get to talk to her for a few minutes. Then it was time to go to 5th grade. I wasn't excited for Cameron to have her, and really last night didn't make me feel a ton better about her. Cameron thinks she is nice enough, so we will have to see what the year holds.

Last night was the final summer synchro, so I can cross Thursday night skating off my list. When synchro starts in 2 weeks we will be at our regular Tuesday time slot. Yay! I know that if I do something all summer it should become a routine, but it just seems so off to have synchro on Thursday when I know it will be on Tuesday eventually. And I wonder why Cameron is the way he is! ha

We are officially double digits for our trip to Disney- 99 days from now we will be in Disney World. Really the trip is under control from an organization standpoint but there is always more that can be done!

I am meeting an old friend at the airport this morning before she heads out of town. David used to work with her husband at Reuters. They are from Austrailia and left the country when Becca was a baby. I have been trying to hook up with her all week, and it has finally come down to this. It will be nice to see her again. If I don't get in the shower I will never get there though.

Nothing exciting planned for Labor Day weekend- oh well. Maybe some stuff can get done around the house!

26 August 2008

Finally!

We had a big skating moment tonight- Becca finally passed the pewter freestyle class! She has been in this class since JANUARY. In her defense, it is a tough class and she was the first 4 year old in the class. I am expecting a long stay in the bronze freestyle class since it contains a salchow, a toe loop, and half lutz, and a change foot spin. She is pretty close on her salchow, is moving forward pretty quick with her scratch spin, and just started her toe loop yesterday.

Cameron and David went to an Orchestra meeting tonight. Cameron is going to start playing the violin at school after labor day. I guess that I will be heading out later this week to get him a violin. I don't know if he will play more than just this year or not, in 6th grade band is an option and he will be able to play the drums. I think he will enjoy it though.

We have officially started school- Cameron has had homework every day since last Friday. Becca even brought homework home today. Cameron has had all math homework. I hate math homework. It's a good thing I have David to help him do it. Much to Becca's dismay they are working on letter recognition at school. Her homework tonight was to have me read her the title and first page of a book and then help her find the end of the book. I made her do all the reading.

Things are well here. I am getting used to the quiet, and noticing the days going by faster. Right now I am ready to head to bed though. :)

22 August 2008

One week down.....

The kids made it through the first week of school. There was only a little trouble for Becca. She had some problems with remaining in the recline position during rest time, and a run in with a boy over a carpet square. She wanted his square, so she told him to get out of her way. I guess I don't have to worry that she will allow people to boss her around.

Cameron is no longer sitting next to his "mortal enemy" and seems to be adjusting to school. He actually brought homework home for the first time today. This is the first year that he has ever had weekend homework- I don't think I really enjoy it. He got measured for a violin at school and is going to play with 5th grade strings. He decided not to play hockey this year, but he will still have his drums, the violin, and I think he is going to play basketball. My plan is to get him enrolled in private swimming lessons as well, although he is not nearly so impressed with that.

It's been tough to get used to the quiet around the house. I have waited years to be alone, and now I don't know what to do with my self! Word on the street is that I will get used to it. It was nice to head to the doctor today and not have to find a sitter or ask grandparents. We only have 3 and a half months until we go to Disney- maybe I can spend the time planning that trip!

I did get some exciting news at the doctor today. The nodes on my vocal cords are gone. He really didn't have an explanation for why I still can't sing, maybe you do lose it if you don't use it! I am going to keep on my reflux diet to keep them from returning, and he made some changes in my allergy meds, but otherwise I am fine.

I decided that I am going old school with my birthday present. We are headed to Crown Center so that I can get a Franklin Planner with my birthday money. I have tried all of the "new hotness" methods, and it seems that I am just a paper and pen kind of gal.

We have quite the boring weekend planned- all we have is a birthday party on Sunday for one of Becca's friends. Maybe I will get something done for a change!

19 August 2008

alone.

Ignore the fact that this is quite possibly the worst first day of school picture of *all time*. For the first time in 10 years I am alone for the day every day. It is kind of surreal actually. I thought I would be sad- but I'm not really. I thought I would be happy- but I'm not really that either. Mostly, it's just nice to watch something other than the Disney Channel on tv!

I never thought this would happen to someone I knew...

It seems that earlier today my second cousin was murdered. They think that it was a case of domestic violence, and I think that her kids were there when it happened. What a tragedy for those children to have to witness their mother die at the hands of her boyfriend. Her children are 11 and 13. I wasn't particularly close to her, but I still feel sad for the loss of someone I have known since I was a child. I remember many Thanksgivings and Christmases with our families all together.

I suspect that this is a particularly devastating blow for her mother. 5 years ago she lost her husband suddenly, and now her daughter is gone. I would imagine that she will be responsible for raising Lynn Ann's children now and I hope that all turns out well for their family.
